An emergency Arab League meeting on Syria will be held on Thursday, the bloc’s deputy leader said Sunday.
The meeting comes just days before an internationally organised conference is to be held to discuss finding a peaceful solution to the two-year old revolution-turned civil war.
Ahmed Ben-Hilli, the deputy leader of the bloc, told AFP reporters that the foreign ministers of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Sudan would come together to mull over the US-Russian backed international conference. The recent revival of international diplomatic efforts over Syria aims to find a political solution to the crisis.
The conference aims to include all Syrian parties, bringing rebel leaders and members of President Bashar Assad’s regime together to the discussion table.
However, several difficulties may arise out of members of the opposition refusing to negotiate with Assad, and the tyrant leader’s refusal to remove himself from Syria’s future.
Moscow, Assad’s staunchest ally, is calling on Iran to participate in the diplomatic arena, whilst the US has it’s friend Saudi Arabia to support it throughout the conference, according to AFP reports.
