Federal law enforcement agencies seek wireless Mesh networks for covert communications

The chief procurement officer for DHS is gathering information from prospective vendors who could supply wireless IP Mesh transceivers that could enable federal law enforcement agencies to covertly transmit video and other data.
These law enforcement agencies would like to establish self-forming, self-healing mobile networks that can be utilized in either fixed or mobile environments, either indoors or outdoors, according to a “sources sought” notice published by DHS on Dec. 11.
The notice did not spell out how the law enforcement agencies would use such Mesh networks, nor the types of crimes they would hope to solve with such covert capabilities. The notice did, however, ask the potential vendors to describe how their products might integrate with other technologies, such as video encoding schemes, audio technologies such as land mobile radios, GPS and other locating technologies.
