Two Government Insiders Get Key Positions in the Trump Administration

For an anti-establishment kind of guy, Donald Trump sure is looking hard at a bunch of government insiders to fill his cabinet.

The latest appointment: Kathleen McFarland as deputy national security adviser. She’s been in government a long time:

She was a member of Henry Kissinger’s National Security Council Staff during the Ford administration, served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs under Reagan from 1982 to 1985, and senior speechwriter to and principal deputy assistant secretary of defense Pentagon spokesman under Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger.

McFarland is also a board member of The Jamestown Foundation. The CIA and director William Casey were instrumental in the formation of the institute. Zbigniew Brzezinski is a past board member. Former CIA intelligence officer Michael Scheuer said he was fired from the foundation because he wasn’t sufficiently pro-Israel.

McFarland’s appointment is at odds with Trump’s olive branch extended to Putin and Russia. The Jamestown Foundation was established to support Soviet defectors. In 2009, the Russian government accused the foundation of spreading anti-Russian propaganda.

In 2013 the Russians said Boston marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev attended Jamestown-funded workshops in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi in 2011.

Jamestown president Glen Howard is the former executive director of the American Committee for Peace in Chechnya, a neocon campaign aimed at undermining Russia by facilitating US support for nationalist and Islamist movements in the North Caucasus.

The committee operates out of Freedom House, a US government funded “pro-democracy” organization that specializes in color revolutions. Freedom House’s executive director was David Kramer, a former assistant secretary of state during the Bush administration. His experience includes working as a fellow for the neocon Project for the New American Century and the German Marshall Fund.

Trump also appointed Donald F. McGahn. He will serve as assistant to the president and White House counsel. McGahn was chief counsel for the National Republican Congressional Committee between 1999 and 2008. He defended House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

McGahn established a legal practice and has represented the Koch brothers-funded Freedom Partners.
