Russia calls on Israel to stop Syria attacks

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said yesterday that Israel must stop its “arbitrary attacks” on Syria.

“The practice of arbitrary strikes on the territory of a sovereign state – in this case, we are talking about Syria – should be ruled out,” Zakharova said.

“We should never allow Syria, which has suffered years of armed conflict, to be turned into an arena where geopolitical scores are settled,” she added.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to continue strikes against Syria.

“Our policy is clear and will not change: We are determined to prevent Iran from militarily entrenching itself in Syria against Israel,” he wrote on Twitter.

Kuwait’s Al-Jarida newspaper had quoted an Iranian source as saying that Iranian Commander of the Quds Force Qassem Soleimani had submitted a report to the Iranian Supreme National Security Council explaining that responding to the Israeli strikes inside Israel would lead to Netanyahu’s fall in the elections scheduled for April. He warned that Netanyahu would continue to escalate his strikes on Iranian sites in Syria until he won the election.

According to the paper, Soleimani visited the Syrian side of the Golan Heights in violation of understandings that prevent Iranian forces from approaching the border.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that as many as 21 people, including at least 12 Iranians, were killed in the latest Israeli attacks on Syria.

Syria has threatened to strike Israel's Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv unless the UN Security Council ends years of IDF incursions into Syrian airspace, according to Syria's UN Ambassador Bashar al-Jaafari.

Despite claiming that their Sunday night airstrikes against Syria were exclusively targeting Iran’s Quds Force, Israeli airstrikes against Syria appear to have almost exclusively hit Syrian military targets, particularly the nation’s air defenses around Damascus airport. Israeli strikes destroyed eight Syrian air defense batteries, and killed at least 11 troops in the strikes. The batteries were mostly aging Soviet designs, the sort Syria has traditionally favored for targeting incoming Israeli missiles.
